Stay the Course
One thing I have noticed throughout my time in the staffing industry, and quite honestly in life as well is that the day is full of unexpected “to-do’s”. Every day we sit down with our team and prioritize our days, and every day it seems that something comes up a few hours in each day that causes your focus to waver. An unexpected phone call, a new requirement or a personal issue, our day’s are full of things pulling us from the previously stated goals. The solution I am learning to this is a 3-step process.
The first step is to list. Spend 10 minutes on the first day of the week listing realistic, attainable goals that you can focus your energies on. It’s only natural with the distractions I mentioned above that these are subject to change daily, so take 10 minutes of every day listing out the achievable goals as steps to your ultimate goal.
Secondly, you need to prioritize. Take those goals you made and rank them in a way that you are putting the most essential first, and the “nice to have’s” towards the bottom.
Lastly comes the execution. This is the hardest step because it requires you to take the theoretical and put it into action. It requires you to not take any phone calls for an hour so you can knock out some of the requirements on your list.
Some days I can leave the office literally feeling like a ping-pong ball having been bounced from here to there without accomplishing my most important daily goals. If you are anything like me when it comes to goal setting, I’d encourage you to sit down and repeat after me: list, prioritize, execute. |
