Welcome to the neighborhood!
With the addition of new coworkers, stress can be added—much like new neighbors. When I have a new neighbor move in I wonder… What if they’re really loud? What if they don’t take care of their yard? What if our dogs don’t get along? I hope they’re nice…
Much of that same uncertainty can also come up when new people join our teams at work. After learning about Bryan joining the iMethods family, I was very excited but also nervous. We’ve all had bad co-workers before and when learning that another member will be on boarded, one can become anxious. I think that the most important thing to remember is that when a new person joins your team, it’s up to you to make them comfortable! Roll out the welcome mat!
Take your new team member to lunch. Getting to know each other on a more personal level will allow you to relate to each other better, and the better we know each other, the better we work together!
Pass along your knowledge. It’s hard enough to move into a new role, and your new co-worker is intimidated by you. Help from the beginning and he/she will be so grateful.
Ask what you can do! New employees have so many questions about policy and procedures. Ask what you can do to help make it easier for them. That way, they won’t always feel bad about asking you 500 questions.
But, the most important thing is to be sincere. Help because you want to!
Until next month….
