Trial by Fire
When I stepped into work on my first day of recruiting, I had a very incomplete picture of what this industry was all about. I’d think to myself, what will my days be like, or what separates an ok recruiter from a truly impactful one? This wasn’t the first time I had asked myself these questions.
Coming out of college, I was asking these same questions about the investment bank I was starting with. It took me about a month to be able to correctly articulate what it was that I did! Nonetheless, the same questions lingered, what is my day going to be like, how do I truly become good at this craft?
Through my experience, there are 2 ways to answer these questions: Training and Trial by Fire. Having experienced both, in my mind there is clearly no substitute for diving headfirst into what your new job is all about. Application is the key to everything on the job front. Don’t get me wrong, training is absolutely essential to improving processes, and fine-tuning an already well-running machine, but the amount of valuable experience learned while learning on the job is irreplaceable.
It can be very uncomfortable at times to commit to, but trust me, if you find yourself in a new position asking how can I truly get up to speed with where the more experienced workers are, close your eyes, and step in to trial by fire. |
